When a child in poverty fails to get quality education, virtually all the gateways to a better
future slam permanently shut. Access to education has always remained a longed for luxury for
underprivileged children in our country. The ground reality of the average elementary school in
rural and backward areas is grim. Improving education is a critical area of investment.
Rapidly growing size of population, shortage of teachers, books, and basic facilities, and
insufficient public funds to cover education costs are some of the nations toughest challenges.
Furthermore, the rate of school drop-outs amongst students is very high. One of the main reasons
behind this is poverty. When earning livelihood and taking care of the members of the family
becomes the primary matter of concern in one life, education stands a little or, very often, no
chance of pursuance.
In the context of the downtrodden communities from where these students originate, the
breakthrough achievement of our project “Aao Chalen School – An Open School”
lies in the
palpable confidence with who were meek earlier, children, now unhesitatingly express their
opinions, able to perform songs, dance, poems, explained experiments, and raised voices louder
than their parents in their oath that they’ll demand education for themselves as their
birthright.
This is our dream – to give voice to the voiceless, inculcating voices in silent marginalized
disconnected communities right from the beginning, with the hope that one day they will become
active citizens of the nation. When you write down on a piece of paper, you are ten times more
likely to remember it. Most of us have been surrounded by books, notebooks, papers, etc. since
our younger days.
